Taroko's Press Conference

Taiwanese business group Taroko said Wednesday it will expand its entertainment and recreation business to the Chinese city of Suzhou in a joint venture with Japan-based retailer AEON Group.

The partnership involves AEON offering competitively priced rent in its China outlet stores to Taroko, a group which started in 1982 in the textile industry and is now best known for its go-kart and baseball recreational facilities.

The first of four planned entertainment centers will provide Chinese customers with everything from bowling to dining in a 148,800 sq meter space, according to Taroko.

Three more centers will be set up in AEON malls over the next three years, with plans for expansion into Shanghai, Nanjing, Hangzhou and Sichuan between 2014 and 2020, said Hsu Chun-chi, vice president of Taroko Textile Corp.

Hsu added that AEON asked Taroko to partner up in tackling the China market after recognizing the Taiwanese group’s achievements in recreational sports and video arcade facilities.

Taroko is also focusing on the local market as it seeks to find partners for 20 new outlets in Taiwanese cities, including Taipei, New Taipei, Taoyuan, Hsinchu, Taichung and Tainan, said Tsai Ming-chang, the head of the group’s property development arm.
