8 HCMC restaurants recommended by Michelin for ‘affordable prices’

Michelin Guide inspectors recently recommended eight new restaurants in Ho Chi Minh City in its Bib Gourmand list for ‘serving great food with affordable prices,’ with most dining options located in downtown areas near popular tourist attractions.

Man Moi Restaurant at 32 D11 Street in Thao Dien area, home to a large expat community, stands out with red tiles as a fence and is surrounded by green trees.

The restaurant has another branch at 34 Vo Van Tan Street in District 3 near Tao Dan Park.

Michelin has introduced Man Moi as a famous culinary address in Ho Chi Minh City for more than 10 years.

The French food guide suggested that diners should sit at tables in the garden with lots of green trees. The restaurant’s menu focuses on specialties from three regions of Vietnam, divided into salads, soups, main dishes, grilled dishes, desserts, pot dishes and hot pots.

Can Gio grilled duck (pictured) is a must-try dish. The dish is made from a breed of black-feathered sea duck found only in Can Gio coastal district of HCMC, also known as Vam Sat saltwater duck.

Prices start from VND100,000 (US$3.93) per serving.

Sol Kitchen & Bar is located in an old French villa at 112 Ly Tu Trong Street in District 1. The Michelin Guide describes the restaurant as “boasting strong Latin American cuisine in the heart of Ho Chi Minh City.”

The dining space here is considered comfortable with an open kitchen as diners can watch the chef directly prepare their skills.

Chef and restaurant owner Adrian Chong Yen, a Malaysian, had 12 years of cooking experience in Singapore before going to Vietnam. The restaurant’s menu is famous for its red meat dishes, including steak marinated in chimichurri sauce, BBQ ribs marinated in fish sauce, and grilled chicken served with mojo sauce.

The sign of the restaurant is hand-painted on bricks, a very popular sign decoration style of Saigon restaurants before 1975 when there was no technology for making signs by machine.

Michelin said soups there have clear broth and a light scent of Chinese herbs. The dish to try is steamed rice bowl with beef, chicken or Cantonese pork sausage.
