According to research, Vietnam’s favorite fast food chain is KFC.

American chain KFC is the most commonly visited fast food restaurant chain in Vietnam, with 45 percent of respondents visiting its shops often, a recent survey showed.

According to a poll conducted by Ho Chi Minh City-based market research firm Q&Me, it is followed by South Korean restaurant chain Lotteria with 17 percent of 600 respondents and American restaurant companies Pizza Hut and McDonald’s with each receiving 6 percent.

Delicious cuisine (reported by 66% of respondents), a handy location (quoted by 63%), suitability for families and kids (cited by 60%), and menu diversity were the top reasons given for choosing KFC (56 percent).

According to the report, 87 percent of respondents ordered fast food online.

52 percent of these orders came from KFC, followed by 30 percent each from Lotteria and Pizza Hut (21 percent).

With 24 percent of respondents choosing it, “Now” was the most popular delivery app for online orders of fast food, followed by GrabFood (20 percent).

Since 1997, KFC has had 135 locations in Vietnam, mostly in the two largest cities—HCMC and Hanoi—while Lotteria has over 200.

In a recent report, market research firm Euromonitor claimed that foreign competitors dominate the limited-service restaurant sector in Vietnam because local independent chains are typically small family-based businesses lacking the financial wherewithal to compete with the major players.

However, fast food chains as a whole are expanding more slowly. According to market watchers, one of the causes may be that Vietnamese eating habits are changing and placing a higher value on health than convenience.

According to Dcorp R-Keeper, a global company that offers technological solutions to food and beverage businesses, there were 7,000 fast food outlets in Vietnam in 2018. This is a relatively small number when compared to the country’s estimated 540,000 food and beverage businesses, which are made up of 430,000 street vendors, 80,000 restaurants, and 22,000 cafes and bars.
