DUCK DONUTS EXPANDS TO NEW ZEALAND WITH NEW F&B FRANCHISE DEAL

DUCK DONUTS SIGNS MASTER FRANCHISE AGREEMENT

Duck Donuts is set to bring its unique made-to-order donut experience to New Zealand. The US-based donut and coffee chain has signed a master franchise agreement with Martin and Anita van der Velden. The couple, former multi-unit franchisees of Bakers Delight, will lead the brand’s expansion in the country.

Interim CEO Devon Mailey expressed confidence in the partnership. He stated, “We look forward to seeing them bring our brand to life across New Zealand and deliver the unique Duck Donuts experience to local customers.”

Duck Donuts signs master franchise agreement to bring its customizable donuts to New Zealand’s F&B franchise scene.

A STRATEGIC MOVE FOR GLOBAL EXPANSION

This deal marks Duck Donuts’ first major expansion since the departure of CEO Betsy Hamm in January 2025. Her resignation came during a period of corporate layoffs, signaling a transition for the brand. Despite these changes, Duck Donuts remains focused on international growth in the F&B franchise sector.

DUCK DONUTS’ GLOBAL FOOTPRINT

Since its founding in 2006, Duck Donuts has expanded rapidly. The brand operates over 140 outlets in the United States and has a presence in several international markets, including Thailand, the Philippines, Canada, Egypt, Pakistan, Qatar, Curacao, and the Bahamas.

Its entry into New Zealand follows a 2023 franchise agreement in Australia. The Australian deal included plans for five stores in Sydney, though those locations have yet to open.

COMPETING IN NEW ZEALAND’S F&B FRANCHISE MARKET

Duck Donuts will enter a competitive market. In late 2024, US rival Cinnabon opened a store at Auckland’s Westfield Newmarket shopping center. Other established brands like Dunkin’ and Krispy Kreme also operate in the country, with 19 and six stores, respectively.

To stand out, Duck Donuts will emphasize its fresh, customizable donut experience. Customers can personalize their orders with a variety of coatings, toppings, and drizzles, making each visit unique.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR DUCK DONUTS IN NEW ZEALAND?

The exact opening date and store locations have yet to be announced. However, the partnership with the van der Veldens highlights Duck Donuts’ commitment to thoughtful expansion. By working with experienced local franchisees, the brand aims to successfully integrate into the New Zealand F&B franchise landscape.

As the market grows, Duck Donuts’ arrival is expected to offer more variety to local consumers while strengthening the country’s dynamic food scene.
