Popmenu Reveals Hot Consumer Trends for 2024

Popmenu has unveiled the top consumer trends for 2024 in the dining sector. Despite the ongoing staffing shortages and a focus on profitability, the demand for restaurants remains robust. Consumers can anticipate encountering smart technologies at an increasing number of eateries, whether they’re dining in person, ordering online, or making reservations. Furthermore, they can expect a surge in special offers, discounts, and budget-friendly menu options. These insights stem from recent surveys conducted by Popmenu, which polled 1,000 consumers and 461 restaurant operators nationwide.

Brendan Sweeney, CEO and Co-founder of Popmenu, notes, “Restaurant operators are cautiously optimistic about 2024, with inflationary pressures easing and a consistent appetite among consumers for dining out. Despite this optimism, intense competition for labor and customers persists, prompting a reevaluation of marketing and operational strategies.”

Key Consumer Dining Trends:

  • In 2023, restaurant sales surpassed spending on streaming services, ride services, new clothes, gym memberships, sports events, travel, entertainment, personal grooming, home furnishings, and mobile devices.
  • Three out of four consumers dine out at least once a week, with 26% planning to increase their restaurant spending this year.

Restaurant Outlook:

  • Despite job vacancies, 33% of restaurant operators express strong optimism for 2024, while 56% remain cautiously optimistic.
  • To address labor shortages and enhance financial performance, 56% of operators intend to automate more online functions, while 48% plan to automate more on-premise tasks.
  • Popular technologies include AI applications for customized phone responses and brand-specific marketing content. Additionally, 38% of operators are leveraging social influencers to promote their establishments.
  • Operators are also focusing on traditional strategies such as consistent communication with guests, website optimization for search engines, and retaining online ordering on their platforms.

Menu Trends:

  • While 71% of operators plan to increase menu prices, 47% intend to offer more discounts and special deals, with 20% adding cheaper menu options.
  • Expect to see rotating menus, expanded beverage selections, and enhanced kids’ meals.
  • Specialized menus and events, like limited-time online ordering promotions and expanded catering services, are anticipated to drive revenue growth.
