Starbucks opens first signing store in Indonesia, expands into Laos market

Sari Coffee Indonesia, a franchise partner of Starbucks, has launched the first Starbucks signing store in Indonesia in Central Jakarta. The new store, called Starbucks Tata Puri Community Store, is situated on Jl. Tanjung Karang No 3 Kebon Melati and employs staff from the local deaf and hard of hearing community to serve customers.

For customers who do not understand sign language, a writing tablet is available to place orders at the store. The exterior of the store showcases the iconic Starbucks siren logo in Bisindo sign language. Once inside, customers are welcomed by a mural wall and a display of exclusive merchandise collections. The store’s design is accentuated by a large mural painting created by the deaf artist Indira Natalia.

Indonesia’s first Starbucks signing store was launched to coincide with the brand’s 20th anniversary in the country. Starbucks is currently present in 44 cities across Indonesia. In 2020, the brand opened its first Community Store in the Tanah Abang neighborhood of Jakarta with the aim of providing educational opportunities for young people in the area.

Anthony McEvoy, the head of Sari Coffee Indonesia, stated that the signing store exemplifies the company’s commitment to creating a more diverse and inclusive work environment while also ensuring access to all communities.

Last month, Starbucks expanded its operations in Laos by partnering with Coffee Concepts, its franchisee, to enter the country. With this move, Starbucks has now expanded its presence to 84 markets around the world.
