Optimizing Restaurant Outlet Mapping Through Technology

GapMaps, a provider of location mapping services based on technology, has unveiled the inaugural Fast Food and Quick Service Restaurant Retail Network 2023 report in Indonesia. This report scrutinizes the distribution of outlets and market penetration for 12 fast-food restaurant brands across the entire archipelago.

A survey encompassing 3,274 locations throughout Indonesia reveals that KFC boasts the most extensive retail network, with over 700 restaurants strategically placed across the nation.

The report further discloses that KFC has a presence in 52 out of 80 cities with populations exceeding 500,000, and extends its reach to an additional 195 cities with populations surpassing 200,000.

Securing the second position is Pizza Hut with 616 restaurants, followed by McDonald’s with 277 establishments. Beyond KFC and Pizza Hut, the report highlights that other fast-food brands are yet to establish robust retail networks in cities with populations ranging from 200,000 to 500,000.

Even in cities with populations below 200,000, GapMaps found that the presence of the 12 surveyed fast-food brands tends to be constrained. This limitation arises from factors such as external sales demands and the strategic placement of restaurants along main roads, tourist hubs, or satellite/commuter cities.

Andre Smith, the Director of Economics and Research at GapMaps, elucidated that the report offers insights into the competitive market share of fast-food restaurants, aligned with the evolving business networks of these brands in Indonesia.

“Nevertheless, our findings indicate that, when adjusted for regional income levels, the presence of fast-food restaurants in Indonesia has yet to meet international standards. This implies ample opportunities for growth, contingent upon sustained and equitable income growth within the community.”

“Data parameters including competitor locations, demographic details of population and workforce, as well as household income and expenditure, will be leveraged to provide precise recommendations for determining optimal store locations,” concluded Andre.
