South Korean pizza chain GoPizza eyes major Asian expansion

GoPizza, a South Korean fastfood chain, has started its Asian expansion by launching its first physical store in Indonesia. The brand’s initial direct-to-consumer outlet in Indonesia is situated in Jakarta and comes after the opening of a small store in collaboration with Korean multiplex operator CGV inside CGV Grand Indonesia in October of the previous year.

According to reports, the brand will inaugurate its second branch in Mall of Indonesia this month, followed by another at the KM 6B Toll Rest Area the following month.

The company plans to expand its presence beyond Indonesia, aiming to increase its number of locations in India from 25 to 100 this year. Furthermore, it is preparing to enter other markets such as Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, and the US. The brand attributes its strategic decision to launch in Indonesia to the K-wave phenomenon, given the country’s population of over 270 million. The brand offers not only its classic cheese pizza but also Korean fusion pizzas and tteokbokki, a spicy rice cake delicacy.

Initially starting with a small food truck in Seoul in August 2016, this single-serving pizza company, known for its tech-enabled process, launched its first physical store in 2018. In May 2019, the brand opened its first international branch in Bangalore, India, followed by Singapore and Hong Kong in April 2020 and March 2021, respectively.

Last year, the South Korean fast-food chain raised US$25 million in a Series C funding round with the objective of expanding its presence in India.
