Starbucks Expands Rapidly in Asia, Plans to Open 400 More Stores

Starbucks is increasing its expansion efforts in the Asia Pacific region by announcing plans to open 400 additional stores this year. The expansion will include new cities and areas outside of major metropolitan areas in markets such as Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines.

Starbucks also opened a new store this year in Laos, where it first opened in November in Vientiane. However, the rollout plans do not include China and Japan.

In India, Starbucks plans to expand into at least five new cities, building on its existing portfolio of more than 300 stores.

Starbucks achieved 8 percent growth in net new stores over the past year, while in South Korea, the company opened its 5000th location in the region (excluding China and Japan) with a 500sqm drive-thru store in the business district of Gwangyang-si. Starbucks has doubled its number of drive-thru stores in the region over the past four years and plans to open more than 100 locations this year.

According to Michael Conway, the group president of international and channel development for Starbucks, Asia Pacific achieved more than 20 percent growth year on year as recovery continues. The company plans to further its growth in the region by collaborating with its franchise business partners to introduce innovative store formats and continually enhance its existing formats to meet changing customer behaviors.
